Inexmoda and the Gobernación de Antioquia release initiative looking to promote fashion exports

The Gobernación de Antioquia and Inexmoda release the program Proyecta, Nuevos Mercados, an initiative that will train 100 companies from different regions of Antioquia to take them to international markets. Stands out the participation of regions from Antioquia like Urabá, the Eastern and northern regions, represented mainly by manufacturers of feminine, masculine and kids clothing.

July 2020. Colombiamoda 2020 on its 31 edition, and 100% digital, aims to support the fashion industry and boost it when it is most needed due to the pandemic juncture the world is living. This is why, in the frame of the event, Inexmoda and the Gobernación de Antioquia, released the program “Proyecta, Nuevos Mercados”, a long term alliance between the two entities looking to catapult small companies from the fashion industry of Antioquia, having Colombiamoda as the starting point to achieve it.

“Antioquia is a department in which the whole value chain is integrated for the textile-clothing industry, and over time has specialized in different processes and products: design schools, textiles, supplies, clothing processes, jeanswear, sportswear, swimsuits, among others; hence, Antioquia is today the biggest producer for the clothing-textile industry, representing 44% of Colombia’s textile industry” stated Lorenzo Velásquez, Director of Knowledge and Transformation.

Antioquia is a department with a textile-clothing tradition with more than 100 years of history and also has a tight relationship with the coffee vocation of the region, where besides Medellín, there are municipalities like Donmatías, Marinilla, El Santuario that have specialized on the textile-clothing business.

“The success the coffee had in Antioquia dragged other industries, among them, the textile industry, due to the machinery used to weave the coffee bags, turned into cloth weaving for garments. Also, the Thousand Days War, favored Antioquia, as in the frame of this event, the department worked hardly for the specialization of this industry” said William Cruz Bermeo, professor and researcher.

Projecting the industry of Antioquia towards New Markets

To promote the fashion industry in Antioquia through its exports, Inexmoda and the Gobernación de Antioquia released the program Proyecta, Nuevos Mecados, within the frame of Colombiamoda 2020. The program presents the first step of a long-term alliance to promote the exports from small companies in Antioquia.

“In Antioquia the textile industry has been very important for the development and the creation of new companies and jobs. This alliance is written with the purpose we have to reactivate and reconvert the economy and protect the employment with the development plan Unidos por la Vida 2020-2023 for the regions of the department” noted the Secretary of Productivity and Competitiveness of the Gobernación de Antioquia, Maritza López.

The program Proyecta, Nuevos Mercados, called 30 fashion entrepreneurs from Antioquia, who will receive training and strategic accompaniment from experts, to prepare their business model and manage to reach international markets. These 30 entrepreneurs also had the chance to participate on the Business Meetings of Colombiamoda 2020 with previous preparation to face the event.

In the program there are entrepreneurs from five subregions and stand out Urabá and the northern and eastern regions of Antioquia, of which prime feminine, masculine and kids manufacturers. Brands like Somos Jeans, Bagg Style, I Love Simoona and Confecciones la Montaña are some of the participating companies that will have the opportunity to train in order to reach international markets.

Confecciones La Montaña, veterans project

On its first edition, Proyecta, program of the Gobernación de Antioquia with Inexmoda, has the participation of Confecciones La Montaña, one of the business lines from the cooperative gathering 125 veterans of the Colombian armed conflict.

The textile line from the cooperative has 24 people dedicated to the sportswear clothing and outdoor accessories, and thanks to Proyecta, participate actively on the Business Meeting of Colombiamoda 2020 and has managed to close business for 50.000 sports bags units, with the possibility to increase up to 80.000 on the short term. “For the first time a veterans project arrives to Colombiamoda to make business and we are very happy with the results”, stated Martín Batalla, manager of the cooperative.

Inexmoda and the Gobernación de Antioquia rescue the textile ancestral knowledge from the region

For Colombiamoda 2020, Inexmoda and the Gobernación de Antioquia are betting on the economic development of the regions of the department through the Fashion System. This is why programs like Proyecta are born and there is a bet on highlighting the Fashion Industry from Antioquia with minidocumentaries that will be part of the entertainment branch in Colombiamoda 2020 and will take place from Thursday 30 July to Saturday 1 August.

These minidocumentaries represent a tribute to some of the regions from the department as Donmatías, Sonsón, Urrao and Turbo. On these, the audience will be able to learn about the textile tradition from this municipalities, from its birth to ancient techniques in danger of extinction. On the entertainment branch of Colombiamoda 2020, the minidocumentary “Tradiciones Mágicas de Antioquia por la Gobernación de Antioquia y Alado” (Magical Traditions from Antioquia by the Gobernación de Antioquia and Alado), that will be broadcasted on Thursday 30 July at 6:15 p.m., will present the textile traditions of Antioquia. Furthermore, “Donmatías, el Paraíso Azul” (Donmatías, Blue Paradise) will present the vocation for denim of this municipality on Friday 31 July at 4:45 p.m.

The alliance between the Gobernación de Antioquia and Inexmoda bets on the long term with the purpose of strengthening the business infrastructure of the region and also make it visible through powerful platforms as Colombiamoda 2020, The Digital Fashion Week.
