July 2021. For Colombiamoda, Colombia Fashion Week®,national fashion and all its participants are the driving force of an event that has been renewed and has once again taken into account the challenges faced globally and nationally. For this reason, focusing on the Fashion System and its importance in the industry and culture of the country, it continues to privilege talent from its early stages of academic training, to the formation of designers and brands with their own identities. Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021 ended its third day with a show that combines academic knowledge, new talents and bets on fashion that revolve around sustainability and well-being in different areas.
This special edition included different points of view that enhanced Colombian fashion and allowed it to continue positioning Colombia as a unique reference in the design industry. The undeniable talent of Juan Pablo Socarrás has led him to create a distinctive career, becoming a milestone in the history of Colombian fashion, thanks to creations full of sensitivity and dexterity, focused on craftsmanship and its sustainability.
The collection presented at Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021 final runway was called “Magdalena”, a tribute to the river that crosses a large part of the country, also to the women of several regions that accompany its course. Along with the Corporación Mundial de la Mujer Colombia, an entity that promotes economic, human and social development nationwide.
A total 67 women in disadvantaged social backgrounds were responsible for making this project a reality, whose objective was to make visible the personal stories of each of these women from within their professions. In this way, Magdalena came to life with a mixed presentation of 36 outputs, with an objective aimed towards the essence of Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021, pointing sustainability: environmental, transforming Coca-Cola’s plastic materials, cultural in collaboration with Colombian ancestral communities and economic by positively impacting these talented women.
With an eye on the future and new talents, support continues to be reaffirmed in spaces that promote and make visible Colombian talent. El Cubo is one of them; an initiative created to publicize outdoors the youngest brands and designers, intended for all Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021’s attendees.. For this year, Carmen Nava, a proud Venezuelan designer, appealed to the union through a colorful and ready-to-wear proposal, thinking about her country and the challenges faced by being a migrant.
Diversity was an important part of the special edition, as evidenced by the participation of Aerie and “Belleza Absurda”, a proposal that sought to break molds, colors and body stereotypes, with an urban proposal that privileged both physical and mental comfort: “Thinking of oneself as a unique and perfect being”, privileging the difference.
Within diversity, innovation and new generations have and will always have a privileged place. Since its creation, Epica: Innovation Challenge, an Inexmoda’s program in partnership with Medellin’s town hall, has established itself as a project of active growth every year, positively impacting the citizenship and all the talents that seek to express themselves, grow and help region’s economic, social and cultural growth.
For this edition of Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021, One Half, a brand founded three and a half years ago and whose heart is the essence of sustainability, through sportswear made of denim, linen and cotton, inspired by a fashion market where sizes are less and less important.
The Universidad de Medellín and the Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina are a relevant part of the event, with talents that renew the structure in harmony with the basic concept of this edition, seeking to penetrate each of the elements that represent Colombiatex + Colombiamoda 2021.
With “Dimensiones de la moda”, the Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina, presented a virtual staging, with the talent of 34 students who reflected in each of their works the new reality since the pandemic, in different universes of clothing, from underwear and sportswear to men’s tailoring, gala and bridal gowns. For its part, the Universidad de Medellin introduced for the first time on the runway with “Geometria del color”, with garments that in 37 outputs combined concepts of clothing, between urban and formal, under vibrant and futuristic colors in tone with both national and international current affairs.
In 2021 and after many challenges, Colombiatex+ Colombiamoda 2021 bet on the sustainability that exists in fashion. A fashion that speaks about experiences, that dialogues and interacts openly. A trend that needs its creators to continue to deepen in the power they have to transform society and continue building an absolutely human industry
